On a beautiful Sunday in October — a day that also marked the Feast of St. Francis and the “birthday” of our beloved church — our congregation gathered not only in worship and thanksgiving, but in deep gratitude for five remarkable women whose quiet service and steadfast faith have helped shape the very heart of St. Francis Anglican Church.

This year, the Anglican Church Women’s Silver Cross was presented to Margo Durocher, Darlene Dumenko, Heather Strong, Dorothy Fischer, and Kathy Woodward, with special recognition also to Madeline Cliff, who received hers earlier this year before her surgery. These women have given of themselves in countless ways — often unseen, always unwavering — and their devotion stands as a living testament to the words of Christ:

“Well done, good and faithful servant... enter into the joy of your Lord.” (Matthew 25:23)

Margo Durocher – A Legacy of Love and Learning

From the earliest days of St. Francis in the late 1970s, Margo has been a cornerstone of our faith community. Her more than 40 years of leadership in Sunday School and Vacation Bible School have touched generations of young hearts, teaching not only Bible stories but the story of God’s love lived out through kindness, patience, and joy. Margo has also served faithfully on our hospitality team, helping create a warm, welcoming spirit that defines St. Francis. Her Silver Cross is not just a symbol of service — it is a celebration of legacy.

Darlene Dumenko – Grace Behind the Scenes

Darlene’s steady, humble service through the Altar Guild has been one of quiet beauty. She tends to the linens, arranges the flowers, and prepares the sacred space where we encounter the presence of God each week. Her work is seen in every polished vessel and every bloom that graces the altar. Darlene’s heart for service also extends to the kitchen, where she helps prepare meals for church gatherings, embodying the Scripture:

“Serve one another humbly in love.” (Galatians 5:13)

Heather Strong – Faith in Action

Heather’s strength of faith is evident not in words, but in action. As a member of the Altar Guild and a constant presence in the kitchen — brewing coffee, setting tables, cleaning up, and ensuring everything runs smoothly — Heather reminds us that small acts done in love are never small in God’s eyes. Her servant heart helps sustain the fellowship that binds us together as one family in Christ.

Dorothy Fischer – A Woman of Prayer and Purpose

Dorothy has been a vital part of St. Francis for many years, pouring her heart into prayer ministry and leadership. Whether leading the Airdrie House of Prayer gatherings on Zoom or in person, supporting Morning Prayer, or serving faithfully as Church Warden, Dorothy’s spiritual leadership and calm strength have blessed our entire congregation. Her dedication to prayer keeps the heartbeat of the church strong and vibrant.

Kathy Woodward – The Steward Behind the Scenes

Twice serving as Treasurer, Kathy’s work is often invisible but deeply impactful. Her stewardship ensures that the lights stay on, the ministries flourish, and the church remains a place of stability and hope. She also faithfully coordinates practical needs — from ordering calendars to helping with catering — always willing to lend a hand wherever needed. Kathy’s careful attention reflects her quiet love for God’s house and His people.

A Celebration of Devotion

As the congregation stood in applause, it was evident that these women have not only served — they have inspired. Their collective example reminds us that the strength of a church is built on the devotion of those who give, love, and lead without expectation of recognition.

On this St. Francis Day, we honour these Silver Cross recipients — women whose hearts reflect the humility of our patron saint and the faithfulness of Christ himself.

May their example continue to encourage us all to “serve the Lord with gladness” (Psalm 100:2), knowing that every act of service, no matter how small, is a thread in the beautiful tapestry of God’s kingdom.
